What is Past Tense?
The Past Tense is used to talk about actions or events that happened before the present time. It has four main forms to express different types of past actions.
Simple Past Tense
Structure: Subject + Verb-ed (or irregular form)
Common Uses:
- To describe an action that happened and finished in the past.
- To talk about a specific time in the past (e.g., yesterday, last week).
Examples:
- I visited my grandparents last Sunday.
- She watched a movie yesterday.
- They went to the market an hour ago.

Past Continuous Tense
Structure: Subject + was/were + verb-ing
Common Uses:
- To describe an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past.
- To show a past action that was interrupted by another action.
Examples:

- They were playing football at 5 PM yesterday.
- While she was cooking, I was setting the table.
Use "was" with singular subjects (I, he, she, it) and "were" with plural subjects (we, you, they).
Past Perfect Tense
Structure: Subject + had + past participle (V3)
Common Uses:
- To describe an action that was completed before another action in the past.
- To show the sequence of two past actions clearly.
Examples:
- She had finished her homework before dinner.
- By the time I arrived, they had left.
- He had never seen the ocean before his trip.
Often used with words like "before," "after," and "by the time" to clarify order.
Past Perfect Continuous Tense
Structure: Subject + had been + verb-ing
Common Uses:
- To talk about an ongoing action that continued for some time before another past action.
- To emphasize the duration of a past activity.
Examples:
- They had been studying for hours before the exam started.
- I had been waiting for you when the bus finally arrived.
Often used with "for" and "since" to highlight the duration of the past action.
