The Anatomy of a Great Essay

The first paragraph of your essay. It grabs the reader's attention, provides context, and presents your main argument (thesis).

  • The Hook

A compelling first sentence to grab the reader’s interest. This could be a surprising fact, a relevant quote, or a thought-provoking question.

  • Background Information

Briefly introduce the topic and provide context. What does the reader need to know to understand your argument?

  • Thesis Statement

A clear, one-sentence summary of your main argument. This is the most important sentence in your essay.
